I had a small scrap of 300gsm watercolour paper measuring 11cm x 12cm. I gessoed the surface here and there to add some texture and then painted random watercolours loosely over that. I just let the colours mix and merge with no particular idea in mind. When dry, I saw the outline of a bowl and flowers. With an ink pen I defined some flowers.
This was a fun, semi-abstract piece and I must do some more.
Knowing that you are painting on a scrap paper takes away all pressure and I find it frees me up a lot more. It takes away the fear of “making a mistake” because really, you don’t care. This is how wonderful surprises can be found and little treasures are born.
